Heritage Representation: The 8th Foundation’s Fashion Show at the Chandler Multicultural Festival

        BY SAMANTA HE

The morning of January 17th was clear and sunny as I arrived at the Chandler International Multicultural Festival to join the 8th Foundation volunteers. Our dedicated organizers had already been hard at work, carefully preparing for our organization’s first festival debut. Their enthusiasm and commitment set a warm and positive tone for the day.

Our main performance was a cultural fashion show that presented traditional clothing from China’s five thousand years of history and its many ethnic groups. Each costume reflected a different story. Some outfits were bright and energetic, inspired by northern horse-riding traditions, while others were elegant and flowing, with graceful wide sleeves and delicate embroidery. One particularly striking costume was decorated with intricate peacock-feather patterns, dazzling under the midday sun.

After many rehearsals, the participants performed confidently in pairs, moving in harmony with the music. The show highlighted styles from famous dynasties such as Wei-Jin, Tang, Song, and Ming, as well as the unique traditions of ethnic groups including the Mongol, Zhuang, and Li peoples. Through colorful garments, silver jewelry, and traditional accessories, the audience was invited to experience the richness and variety of Chinese heritage.

Performing outdoors required patience, flexibility, and strong teamwork. Many volunteers, including myself, had several performances scheduled throughout the day, which meant quick costume changes and careful coordination. We mastered the art of rapid “costume flips,” changing from one elaborate outfit to another within minutes. Preparing these traditional garments—layered skirts, embroidered tops, and wide-sleeved robes—felt like stepping back into another era.

Despite the busy schedule and the bright midday sun, everyone handled the challenges with impressive efficiency and positive energy. Watching the performers on stage—some holding paper fans, others carrying swords—it felt as if they had stepped straight out of an ancient painting. The show finished smoothly, leaving both participants and audience members filled with joy and pride.

A sincere thank you goes to the supportive parents and festival organizers who made this event possible. Most importantly, we feel deeply fortunate and proud to share these beautiful traditions with the community. This experience allowed us to build cultural connections across generations and backgrounds and to celebrate diversity through art and history.
To revive and represent these ancient clothing styles together, with participants of different ages and ethnicities, is truly meaningful. We are honored to play a small part in preserving this heritage and bringing its beauty to life for others to enjoy.
