By Brenda Battaglia

This summer, 30 students from the Shaolin Temple Cultural Center in Arizona went on a pilgrimage to the Shaolin Monastery in Songshan, China, for a remarkable cultural and martial arts study trip.

Abbot Shi Yongxin gives warm welcome
Abbot Shi Yongxin warmly welcomed the students and said to them, “You are welcome back to Shaolin Monastery.” He reminded the students: “The Shaolin Temple belongs not only to China, but to the world.” They are encouraged to make the most of their time in the Shaolin Monastery. “If you have any need, just let us know - Shaolin Temple is also your home.” The abbot also gifted a signed book to each student to mark the visit.

Experience Culture First-Hand
During their time at school, students participate in a range of martial arts and cultural activities:

Martial arts training: Shaolin Kung Fu, Chinese Sanda (Kick Boxing), Traditional Archery

Education and cultural exchanges
The delegation visited Henan University, watched the performances of the school’s outstanding students, and met with the performance team. They also watched the Kung Fu World show and had the opportunity to practice with professional actors. They also visited Kaifeng, the ancient capital of China, to learn more about Chinese history and cultural heritage.

A memorable and rewarding trip
The trip was not only physical training, but also gave the students the opportunity to expose themselves to the roots of Shaolin culture:
Enthusiastic reception: Abbot Shi Yongxin's personal greeting reflects the importance that Shaolin places on its overseas disciples.
Martial Arts and Culture: Students learned Shaolin Martial Arts and gained a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional culture such as meditation and calligraphy.
Culture immersion: Activities such as dragon dance and food tasting provided students with a rich practical experience of Chinese culture.
Learning and communication: Visiting Henan University and training with top martial arts practitioners expanded their horizons.
Emotional bond: The abbot’s famous quote, “Shaolin Temple is your home,” left a deep impression on the students, strengthening their connection to their own cultural heritage.
The students returned to Arizona with new skills, cherished memories and a closer bond with the Shaolin community worldwide. This visit is not only a cultural exchange, but also a reminder that the Shaolin tradition continues to flourish around the world.
