Honoring Heroes: 8th Foundation at Deer Valley Veterans Cemetery
-By Samanta He
Today, the 8th Foundation had the meaningful opportunity to visit Deer Valley Veterans Cemetery to place American flags at the gravesites of fallen U.S. soldiers. Though it was a long drive for my family, every mile was worth it for the chance to honor the brave men and women who served our country.
Our group, made up of around 30 volunteers—a mix of adults and children—gathered with a shared purpose. We arrived early, just before 7:30 AM, ready to begin a day dedicated to remembrance and gratitude. Mr. Randy, one of the organization's directors, opened the event with a short speech. In a special tribute, the team also brought a live, three-foot-tall white head eagle to symbolize the spirit of Memorial Day and respect for our military.
The cemetery was quiet and the weather hot, but that didn’t affect our determination. As we placed flags into the ground, we felt a deep sense of gratitude for the fallen heroes. We covered over 2,000 square feet of gravesites, placing more than 300 flags in about two hours.
To ensure each flag stood straight and secure, we first drilled a three-inch hole into the ground using either a metal punch or an electric drill. Once the hole was ready, we inserted the flagpole before the sand or dirt could fill it in. Sometimes the ground was tough, requiring us to drill multiple times.
Soon, the once-empty field was filled with flags fluttering proudly—and the smiles of volunteers working together. Leaders Yan and Jose closed the event with a short reflection on the purpose of our visit. They reminded us why it's so important to honor our soldiers' sacrifices: the freedoms we enjoy today were hard-won and must be remembered and protected.
Afterward, we enjoyed cold drinks and donuts—a simple but welcome reward after a meaningful morning of service. Though it was hard work, it felt good to begin Memorial Day by giving back and paying tribute to those who gave everything.
