【本报讯】已故联邦参议员麦凯恩(John McCain)的母亲洛波塔‧麦凯恩(Roberta Wright McCain)12日辞世，享寿108岁。
她96岁时，还帮当时年过70的儿子竞选总统的故事，又浮现民众眼前。
活力充沛的洛波塔‧麦凯恩帮儿子拉票时说：“看我现在的样子，你们不用担心我儿子的年纪。”她90几岁还时常和孪生姊妹罗文娜(Rowena)外出旅行。罗文娜99岁时过世。
2008年，麦凯恩在共和党提名大会上，介绍在场的母亲说，她“热爱生命，对世界深具兴趣，浑身都是活力，深信我们每个人生来就是要善用机会，造福我们的国家，若不是她这种人格的力量，我今晚不会站在各位面前。”
洛波塔‧麦凯恩在1933年，年仅20，与麦凯恩父亲私奔结婚， 育有二男一女，长子就是麦凯恩参议员。她丈夫1972年以海军四星上将身分退休，公公也是四星上将。1960年代末，麦凯恩越战被俘时，父亲还担任太平洋司令部司令。
麦凯恩参议员2018年去世。他在2008年的媒体访问中说，父亲经年在海上，抚养他们三兄妹的责任，都落在母亲一人肩上。
麦凯恩在自传中，描述自己被越共关押六年的过往，提到有时候忍不住用英语咒骂北越警卫，母亲得知后说，「儿呀，我要过来，用肥皂好好清洗你的嘴巴。」
麦凯恩参议员曾在华府开玩笑描述妈妈：去年圣诞节，她想开车逛逛法国各地，于是飞到巴黎，想租部车，但被嫌太老了，于是自己买部车，开着去逛法国。
洛波塔去世的消息由她长媳辛迪麦凯恩发布，共和党籍的辛迪最近发布一支跨党派支持拜登的广告，引来不少议论。
亚利桑那州州长杜西周一发布悼词，对洛波塔的去世表示哀悼。
